The other day, I was telling a friend of mine about someone with whom I used to work in a team; that this person X used to spend comparatively less time in working and was still able to produce a lot more, say 3-4 times more than I could in the same time. This friend of mine said - Why are you comparing?
Then I started thinking - Why should one not compare? Suppose that one does not compare one with someone else, what will be the benefit? May be, comparison sometimes creates depression, at extreme, frustration, loss of self-confidence - which might not be the case if one stops comparing. So, that's good! All these extreme conditions are gone! So, basically one has to follow one's own pace and keep on working - that's it!? But, then this implies that whatever one has, one should be satisfied with it. For example, in real life, if one has say an income of 0, accept it and stay with it. Because, if one compares this income, with someone else's income, he might feel sad, depressed and blah blah.. So, better accept it! What applies to human beings, does apply to non-living things too! So, there won't be any need to compare how good a binary search than a linear search, or how good an SVM classifier than a Naive Bayes classifier! Because, applying similar logic as written above - one has to accept one's capabilities! That is, this is what Naive Bayes can do! Don't expect more form it! Well, this seems perfectly fine for non-living things!
But, there are some differences between what a non-living thing can do and what a human being can! One of them is - non-living things don't get depression after they are compared with something else! And, the other one, on similar lines, is - they don't get motivation also after being compared! So, why not get motivated which we human beings can, after getting compared?
I believe one must make comparisons. One must always keep track of who is capable of doing what, also keeping track of what are one's own capabilities. So, I was not at all in agreement with this friend of mine, who said - why are you comparing? Of course, one must! - What one must not do, definitely is overlooking one's own capabilities while making any such comparison.
Well, this also applies to non-living things! Naive Bayes of course is as good as SVM in some cases - which is nothing but it's own capability... But, unfortunately, it can't get motivated and improve itself which a human being can definitely do!
